AM 107: Impacts of Growth and Climate Change on AM Plans

AM 107: Impacts of Growth and Climate Change on AM Plans
Climate change is one of the most complex challenges facing municipalities today.

Webinar Overview:
Average temperatures are increasing, there are shifting historical precipitation patterns, with increased intensity, duration, and frequency of storm events, increasing windstorms, increasing and decreasing lake levels, and many more events. These types of events are becoming more frequent and intense. Climate change and extreme weather impact municipal operations and infrastructure in a number of ways such as more intense rainfall can lead to flooding and by-pass issues for combined sewer systems, source water quality can be impacted, rapid variations in temperature can impact treatment procedures, there can be increased erosion, and additionally there may be increased resourcing requirements of operation and maintenance staff during extreme weather events.

Understanding the probability of occurrence of extreme weather events is an important consideration for asset management frameworks. It is important to understand the impact of climate change on the performance of various infrastructure assets and ultimately the level of service received by the customer. By integrating climate change considerations into existing asset management frameworks, we are better able to inform decision making and resource allocation from an asset management perspective, and much of this can be done using the existing logic, data and systems in place. Addressing climate change falls under two categories: mitigation (taking actions to reduce climate related impacts such as greenhouse gas effects) and adaptation (changing policy, processes, designs and asset management strategies to reduce the risks and impacts from extreme weather and long term climatic changes). Increasingly, municipalities are faced with the need to develop tools to assess and, more importantly, adapt to the effects of climate change.

This webinar will demonstrate best practices in assessing the impacts of climate change and applying it to asset management strategies. In addition, it will review preparedness under key relevant climate factors, level of resilience, and most importantly, will demonstrate a tactical approach to infrastructure planning and implementation to address the climate factors.

What You will Learn:
Questions we will look to answer in the webinar include:
  • What steps can be used to assess the impacts of climate change on municipal infrastructure?
  • How can mitigation and adaptation measures be incorporated into the lifecycle management strategy?
  • How can climate change impacts be integrated into asset risk management and levels of service?

Who Should Attend:
Local government staff that are responsible for asset management planning, financial reporting, and climate change.

Benefits of Attending:
Participants can expect to
  • Gain an understanding of how to assess the risks of climate change on municipal infrastructure
  • Understand and apply a framework for assessing climate impact risks and integrating that into the asset management strategy
