MFOA Offers Seven Membership Types

Municipal Membership

MFOA does not offer individual memberships for municipalities. Memberships are purchased by a municipality and the membership fee is based on the size of the municipality’s population. Since the municipality is the member, each municipality is allowed an unlimited number of members. These members are divided into 2 categories: voting and non-voting members. Each municipality can designate up to a certain number of voting members - again this number is based on population. A municipality can have an unlimited number of non-voting members.

Provincial Membership

MFOA offers individual membership to provincial employees. Provincial members are considered non-voting members.

Corporate Membership

MFOA offers individual membership to corporate employees. Corporate members are considered non-voting members. Corporations may also participate in the MFOA through the sponsorship program or by exhibiting at the MFOA Annual Conference.

Retiree Membership

MFOA offers individual membership to individuals who have retired from the municipal sector. Retired members are considered non-voting members.

Student Membership

MFOA offers individual membership to students enrolled in an eligible education institution as prescribed by the Canada Revenue Agency at the time of application for membership. Student members are considered non-voting members.

Unemployed Membership

MFOA offers individual membership to individuals who are not employed at the time of applying for membership. Unemployed members are considered non-voting members.

Associate Membership

MFOA offers associate memberships for organizations that do not fit into the membership types listed above. Associate members include conservation authorities, district social service administrative boards, and library boards. An associate member can have an unlimited number of non-voting members.

What is a voting member?

A voting member is an employee of a member municipality or external entity entitled to vote in the annual election for the Board of Directors.

What is a non-voting member?

A non-voting member is an employee of a member municipality or external entity who is entitled to all membership privileges except for electing the Board of Directors and voting at the Annual Meeting. Membership privileges include access to the members’ only portion of the website, including the Virtual Library, member pricing for events, and regular updates.

How do I find out if I am a voting member?

Three ways: consult the key contact in your municipality; online through your login (coming soon); or by contacting us at office@mfoa.on.ca.

Who is a Key contact and what is their role?

The MFOA’s key contact is often the most senior finance officer at a member municipality.
It is the key contact’s duty to designate voting members and to keep MFOA up to date regarding current voting and non-voting members.
